Why is the key control cylinder hard to turn on the Detex ECL-230-D-PH?

If the key control cylinder is hard to turn, the Detex ECL-230D-PH is probably out of alignment.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot the problem:

1. Open the door with the paddle bar, reset the alarm, and hold the door open.
2. Insert the cover key into the control cylinder. Turn left then right. The bolt should move in and out.
3. If the bolt does move freely, the bolt and the keeper/strike have an alignment issue. If the bolt doesn't move freely, open the cover with the cover key and disengage it from the back plate.
4. Take off the cylinder housing. Check the timing marks. If the marks are out of alignment, re-install to ensure proper alignment.
5. The tail piece is too long if the cylinder still turns hard. Turn the key inside the cylinder in either direction. Key and Cam should turn smoothly. If the cam doesn't turn, the tail piece has been cut too short.
