What factors can affect the life of an alarm battery?



There are numerous factors that affect the life of an alarm battery, but the most common are ambient temperature, cycling, and chemistry.


Ambient temperature (the temperature of the area where a battery is stored/connected) can have a big impact on the performance of a sealed lead-acid alarm battery, like the Yuasa NP7-12. The prime operating temperature of these batteries is 77 degree Fahrenheit. Temperatures above 77 degrees can reduce battery life; temperatures below 77 degrees can reduce Ah capacity. Controlling temperature at a constant 77 degrees is difficult, but it would benefit users to keep temperatures around that mark. Reference the chart in your battery manual to see how differing ambient temperatures affect battery life and performance.

Cycling depth can also contribute greatly to a battery's lifespan. Battery capacity is reduced by a fraction of a percent every time the battery is discharged and charged. Leaving a battery in a state of discharge for an extended period can result in poor future performance. Also, the depth of a battery's discharge can hurt performance as well. For the best results, recharge the battery as soon as possible after it's discharged, and try to avoid letting the battery fall into a deep discharge.

Chemical changes that occur inside the battery overtime can eventually lead to capacity loss. Sealed Lead-Acid batteries, like the Casil CA1240, are constructed out of electro-chemical cells which allow the batteries to be recharged repeatedly with minimal loss of capacity. However, undesired chemical reactions can cause a breakdown in some of these cells. Cell failure will ultimately impede on battery capacity and reduce its life.
