Compared to 2-Wire smoke detectors, a 4-Wire smoke detector uses an internal alarm relay contact and internal resistor. There is less restriction on the wiring of a 4-Wire smoke detector.  2-Wire and 4-Wire smoke detectors are very similar in job duties but mainly differ in how they connect. Customers may prefer a 4-Wire smoke detector because it is feasible to pinpoint the location of a triggered the alarmed detector which is very useful in false alarm emergency situations
